Saudi man arrested in Egypt for drugs

The suspect, who was getting on a flight to Jeddah, hid the pills in a secret compartment in his belt, according to Egyptian police.

It should be noted that a Saudi court charged an Egyptian lawyer with drug smuggling. The arrest in April led to a diplomatic spat between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Ahmed el-Gezawi was arrested for drug possession as he was trying to enter the kingdom at the Jeddah airport in April.

Gezawi arrest led to demonstrations outside the Saudi embassy in Cairo, where almost 1,000 people gathered in protest. Activists in Cairo say Gezawi helped Egyptians facing trial in the Saudi criminal justice system, which according to international human rights groups conducts unfair trials.

During his hearing Gezawi lifted his shirt to show scars from what he said was abuse during detention and questioning in Jeddah. He could face death penalty.
