Short walks can avert diabetes risk

Researchers say while blood sugar after eating can increase the risk of type-2 diabetes, post-meal walk even for 15 minutes helps regulate blood sugar levels, according to the study published in Diabetes Care.

“High blood sugar after meals is a key risk factor in the progression from impaired glucose tolerance – what the study called ‘pre-diabetes’ to type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” said the Lead author Loretta DiPietro from George Washington University School of Public Health in the US.

The findings unraveled that three 15-minute stroll programs were as effective at lowering blood sugar over a 24-hour period as one 45-minute walk of the same “easy-to-moderate” pace.

A very small group including 10 men and women, mainly in their late 60s was carried out for the research.

The selected participants were healthy and non-smokers but moderately obese who were at the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes due to higher-than-normal levels of fasting blood sugar and to insufficient physical activity.

“The findings are good news for people in their 70s and 80s who may feel more capable of engaging in intermittent physical activity on a daily basis, especially if the short walks can be combined with running errands or walking the dog,” DiPietro stated.
