Spain’s princess named in fraud case

On Wednesday, the court in Palma de Mallorca called Cristina in for an April 27 testimony hearing over a corruption case involving her husband, Inaki Urdangarin.

“It is convenient to clear doubts about this question before ending the instruction on the case,” said Judge Jose Castro, regarding the youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos.

The son in law of Spain’s King is suspected of embezzling millions of euros of public funds paid in contracts to a company he managed several years ago.

Some media reports accused Carlos of taking a close interest in his son-in-law’s business affairs despite the king banning him from family functions.

This came as support for the royal family declined in recent years, amid criticism that it is out of touch with ordinary Spaniards who are struggling with a severe economic crisis.

According to a recent government poll, Spaniards consider corruption as the second biggest problem in the country after unemployment.

Spain’s economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008, which has taken with it millions of jobs.
