Spaniards protest austerity measures

Demonstrations took place on Monday night in Madrid and 54 other cities across the country, including Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, and Malaga, where protesters chanted anti-government slogans.

According to reports, the country’s main labor unions, including Trade Unionist Federation (USO), the Comisiones Obreras trade union (CCOO), and the General Union of Workers (UGT) had organized the demonstrations.

On Monday morning, over 80,000 people, including doctors, nurses, and public health workers rallied in the capital against the government’s plans to privatize the public health sector.

“The government says they want to save money, but the first thing we have proved is that the changes that they want to make is going to cost the community more than the measures,” said a doctor during the rally.

On Sunday, thousands of Spaniards staged anti-austerity demonstrations in protest at the country’s economic policies and rising unemployment.

Battered by the global financial downturn, the Spanish economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008, taking millions of jobs with it.

Protests against austerity measures, including cutbacks applied to pensions, the education sector, and health services are held on an almost daily basis in the country. Teachers, miners, health workers, and students have organized demonstrations, which have attracted hundreds of thousands of people.
