Summary Box: FAA looks for ways to test gadgets

POSSIBLE CHANGES: The government is exploring ways to make it easier for airlines to allow passengers to use personal electronic devices such as tablets, e-readers and music players during takeoffs and landings.

THE HURDLES TODAY: Any airline is allowed to test specific makes and models to make sure they are safe for navigation, but few airlines have done so because there are so many devices, and testing them all isn’t practical.

WHAT’S CHANGING: The Federal Aviation Administration is looking at ways to bring airlines, gadget makers and others together to discuss whether there are practical ways to do such testing.
