Syria meddling ‘catastrophe’ for Mideast

According to a report published by the People’s Daily on Thursday, the world powers should “realistically” react to the Syrian issue and “tensions” across the Middle East.

The Chinese paper added that the spread of the Syrian unrest would be a “catastrophe in a crucial phase of global economic recovery.”

“The Middle East is the world’s most important fuel depot. If gripped by chaos, oil prices would skyrocket, shocking the stock market, financial systems and economies,” the paper said.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Bashar al-Assad.

The West and some factions of the Syrian opposition accuse the government of being behind the months-long unrest, but Damascus persistently insists that “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are responsible for the turmoil, which it says has been orchestrated from abroad.

Syrians have repeatedly expressed solidarity with the government over the past weeks.

On February 4, China and Russia vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution supporting an Arab League plan concerning Syria at the United Nations Security Council. Beijing and Moscow rejected the draft as “unbalanced.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that “intervention from the outside” will not solve the Syrian issue.

“Only intensive dialogue within Syria will bring about a solution,” Lavrov added.

The Russian foreign minister also said the Syrian parties which have discouraged the “opposition” from holding an official dialogue with the government of President Assad are responsible for continuation of unrest in the country.
