Syria paying for anti-Israel stance: Jalili

“Damascus is paying the price of resistance against the Zionist occupiers. Considering this, it is [only] natural that the US and Western governments would make efforts to seek revenge from the Syrian government and nation,” Jalili said Tuesday during a meeting in Tehran with Speaker of Syrian People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham.

The SNSC secretary reiterated that Syria’s role has been pivotal in the resistance against the Israeli regime “and even those countries, which opted for silence against the occupiers in recent years, do admit that the achievements of the Palestinian struggle are indebted to the Syrian support.”

Jalili also censured some regional governments’ backing of terrorist acts in Syria and said, “People of the region know well that those, who lack the record of holding even a single election in their own countries, cannot claim democracy in other states.”

He further added that while the Syrian nation desires reforms for a better future in their country, they would never tolerate foreign intervention and terrorism.

For his part, Speaker Laham expressed gratitude for the position the Islamic Republic has adopted towards the Syrian situation and emphasized that conditions in his country are in contrast to what the Western media portray.

The Syrian parliament speaker arrived in Iran to discuss further development of ties between the two countries.

The new Syrian parliament began its work on May 24 under a fresh constitution approved by a majority of voters in a February national referendum.

Laham was elected as the speaker of the new Syrian parliament during the opening session of the assembly.

Parliamentary elections were held in Syria last month as part of President Bashar al-Assad’s political reforms.
