Syria’s and Turkey’s Kurds Offered as Pawns in Turkish – Russian Chess Game?

nsnbc : Syria’s Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) notes that it hasn’t been invited to join the new ceasefire agreement for Syria, or talks in Astana or Geneva. It appears that Russia has given up on the demand that Kurds be included in peace talks to reach and agreement with Turkey.

PYD co-chairman Salih Muslim informed the press that the Democratic Union Party (PYD) was not invited to join the new ceasefire agreement in Syria. The PYD and its military wings the YPG and the all female YPJ are traditional allies of Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party PKK.

The PKK has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish State since 1984 and enjoyed more than just “sympathies” from Moscow and Syria. Most objective analysts assessed Moscow’s and in part Iran’s support of the PKK as part of a strategy that aimed at using the PKK in the case of a war between Turkey and Russia or NATO and Russia. Syria has “tolerated” the PYD and its military wing the YPG for the same reason.

PYD co-chaiman Salih Muslim commented: “We aren’t included… Nobody asked us to join the truce because countries in the region deny that there is a nation called Kurds”.

Salih Muslim said also said that the establishment of the Syrian Democratic Front that is dominated by the PYD’s military wings but unites broad forces of the internal opposition and Kurdish groups, will not lead to Kurdish engagement in the intra-Syrian talks in Astana and Geneva.

“I do not think that establishment of this opposition group will help to engage Kurds into talks and help to solve Kurds’ question,” Salih Muslim said.

The exclusion of the PYD and Syrian Kurds, as previously demanded by Moscow, was also confirmed by the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA). On Thursday Osama Abu Zaid, a spokesman for the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army FSA rebel alliance, said that along with jihadist group the Islamic State (IS), the Syrian Kurdish YPG would not be included in the countrywide ceasefire, nor would the Kurdish PYD political party be included in peace talks planned to take place in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana. Osama Abu Zaid sported a copy of the agreement to prove the fact.
