Big-box retailer Target appears to be doubling down on wokeism by promoting an LGBT Pride strategist, following backlash the company received for selling LGBT products.
The Minneapolis-based Target promoted Erik Thompson as senior LGBTQIA+ segmentation specialist and Pride lead. Thompson, who has been with the company since 2016, previously served as an associate buyer of men’s sportswear between 2016 and 2019. After that stint, he was promoted to buyer in Target’s beauty and cosmetics division.
The newly promoted LGBT marketing strategist plans to “flip the script and rewrite the narrative of [consumer packaged goods] retail industries to better serve all segments, and thoughtfully and authentically cater to all guests, all humans and all hearts who enter [Target] stores and across the nation.”
Thompson, who went by the handle @gaycruella on Instagram, shared the news of his promotion with his followers. The LGBT strategist said he was “honored” to accept the role, adding: “Time to whip out the glitter and hellfire, and rip that old world to shreds, darlings.”
One commenter put in their two cents on Thompson’s promotion, sarcastically asking: “[Are] you [going to] make Target’s sales tank, too?” He responded in the affirmative, answering that he would “make sales tank” with heart and kissing emojis.
Target stocking LGBT products and appointing Thompson to oversee their marketing
Target’s appointment of Thompson as lead LGBT marketer lines up with its recent introduction of woke products on store shelves. In his new role, Thompson will be in charge of making sure these products sell. But unfortunately, he will have to endure criticism from outraged customers disappointed with Target’s wokeism.
Earlier this year, the big-box retailer yielded to wokeism by offering products in time for Pride month – which is typically celebrated in June. Even worse, it stocked some products designed by a known Satanist, further adding fuel to the fire.
Writing for PJ Media, Catherine Salgado expounded on the different items Target offered for Pride month. Such items include Pride-themed body suits, rompers and bibs for babies. For older children, there are swimsuits, socks, leggings and dresses.
More notably, it also included chest binders and “tuck-friendly” swimsuits for gender-confused individuals.
Meanwhile, an InfoWars piece noted that some of the items Target sold for Pride month were from designer Abprallen. “The items include a ‘We Belong Everywhere’ mini messenger bag, a ‘Too Queer for Here’ tote bag and a ‘Cure Transphobia, Not Trans People’ sweatshirt – all listed as ‘Pride Adult Clothing,'” it said.
“But it was a ‘Satan respects pronouns’ shirt that garnered the most attention. Other products feature skeletons draped in Pride and trans colors, ‘gay cult’ stuff and buttons with ‘trans witches for abortion’ emblazoned on them.”
A not-so-merry “wokemas” for Target
The resulting backlash against the Pride items prompted a boycott from outraged customers. This forced Target to move the controversial items to the back of its stores. The boycott had a serious effect on the company, as the launch of the Pride products and the resulting boycott forced the company’s stock to drop from roughly $160 to $130 a share per the Epoch Times.
But it seems that Target hasn’t learned anything at all from this lesson, as it launched “woke” Christmas decorations months after the Pride fiasco. Based on pictures shared by the X account End Wokeness, One photo featured a figurine that looked like a dark-skinned Santa Claus in a wheelchair. Another photo showed a nutcracker soldier with its cap adorned with the six-color Pride rainbow and holding a Progress Pride flag. “You would think [Target] would have learned from the last time,” one commenter wrote. “When will companies finally start to realize it? Go woke, [get] broke.”
