Top political insults and ‘open mic moments’

Peer Steinbruck, German electoral candidate, calls Silvio Berlusconi a “clown”

At a rally in Potsdam, the Social Democrat politician said he was “appalled
that two clowns have won” the election, after Italians voted for both
Mr Berlusconi and comedian Beppe Grillo.

He added insult to injury by describing Mr Berlusconi, whose last term in
office was mired in sex scandals involving scantily-clad showgirls and
alleged prostitutes, as “a clown with a testosterone boost”.

Uruguayan President Jose Mujica calls Cristina Kirchner, president of
Argentina, “an old hag”.

Mr Mujica spoke disparagingly of Cristina Kirchner without realising his
microphone was turned on at a press conference in April. He also said that
she was “worse” than her late husband Nestor, president before her
who died suddenly of a heart attack in 2010 and had an eye condition.

“This old hag is worse than the cross-eyed man,” he told Carlos
Enciso, the governor of Uruguay’s Florida province.

“Cross-eyes was more of a politician, she’s just stubborn.”

Nicolas Sarkozy: “I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar.”

Then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy was overheard criticising Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Barack Obama, at the G20 Summit in Cannes in
2011.

“You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than
you,” Mr Obama replied.

George W Bush greets the British prime minister with “Yo Blair!”

At the G8 summit in Russia, the then-president greeted Tony Blair with: “Yo
Blair, how’s it going?”

The two men then proceeded to chat – with microphones catching every word. Mr
Bush went on to discuss the Middle East, saying that if Hizbollah stops
attacking Israel then peace will be reached.

“The irony is that what they need to do is to get Syria, to get Hizbollah
to stop doing this —- and it’s over.”
