nsnbc : U.S. President-elect Donald Trump nominated ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Many denounce Trump for choosing Tillerson for “lucrative connections” in Russia while few pay attention to the fact that ExxonMobil’s role in biasing climate research and an agreement between Russian energy giant Rosneft and ExxonMobil on joint hydrocarbon exploration projects in the Arctic.
Trump used his Twitter account to confirm the nomination of ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Tillerson has never held public office and has no experience in diplomacy. However, Trump noted “His tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice for Secretary of State”.
Trump also expressed his hope that Tillerson “will promote regional stability and focus on the core national security interests of the United States”. Tillerson is known for having good contact to key figures in Russian business as well as politics. A point that drew some criticism among Trump critics. Tillerson’s appointment will have to be approved by the Senate.

The Press Secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Pescov, on the other hand, noted that Tillerson’s good relation to Russia as a businessman and as a potential Secretary of State is a completely different thing. “This is a big difference – being the Secretary of State and being the head of even a very big company and that’s why any sympathies certainly recede into the background.”
Asked why the CEO of ExxonMobil was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship, the spokesman said this award is traditionally given for an activity in developing cooperation in any particular area and contribution to the development of good international relations. Peskov recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin has held business meetings with Tillerson and his partners several times. The Kremlin spokesman stressed that Moscow seeks “mutually beneficial and equal cooperation in those areas that are interesting for our countries.”
While the arguments about Tillerson’s business connections could be opposed by mentioning that those who are promoting that discourse are largely identical with those who didn’t complain about Vice-President Biden’s business interests in Ukraine, there’s one point that appears to be omitted by most media.
ExxonMobil is notorious its 50-year-long funding of “science” that refutes the adverse impact of the use of hydrocarbons on the environment. When called out on the fact last year, the company, under Tillerson’s leadership, cried “conspiracy“.
But global warming is, arguably, good for joint U.S.-Russian business enterprises. In 2014 the Russian Rosneft and ExxonMobil agreed to let diplomatic deepfreeze be diplomatic deepfreeze and signed an agreement on joint hydrocarbon exploration projects in the Arctic.
