Turkmenistan to raise Iran gas exports

The Turkmen government announced on Thursday that the decision was made during the recent 12th session of Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission in Tehran earlier this month, Oil Ministry’s official news agency, SHANA, reported on Friday.

The Turkmen government said in a statement that there are good prospects for increasing export of electricity and energy to Iran.

Foreign ministers of Iran and Turkmenistan recently signed a memorandum of understanding to increase trade volume and economic relations between the two countries.

“We will make our utmost effort to fulfill the wishes of the two countries’ presidents to improve the volume of trade and economic ties to USD10 billion within the next years,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters on July 16.

He added that the value of exchanges between Tehran and Ashgabat has reached five billion dollars thanks to the firm determination of the Iranian and Turkmen presidents.

The Iranian minister stated that during the two-day session, five committees discussed issues including energy, transportation and trade as well as economic, cultural and scientific cooperation.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov discussed Turkmenistan’s gas exports to the Islamic Republic in a telephone conversation on April 27.

Iran and Turkmenistan have had official diplomatic relations since Turkmenistan’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Iran was the first nation to recognize Turkmenistan as an independent country.

Since then, the two countries have enjoyed good relations and have cooperated in the economic, infrastructure and energy sectors.
