U.S. to New Zealand: Hand Over Megaupload Founder Kim Dotcom

Kim Dotcom, the German-born enigmatic founder of file-sharing website Megaupload, is wanted by the U.S. for extradition from New Zealand.

The U.S. officially requested New Zealand send Dotcom, whose birth name was Kim Schmitz, along with three other Megaupload employees to American shores (and courts) on Friday, according to the BBC.

Dotcom was arrested at his lavish mansion in New Zealand in January on charges of enabling copyright violations and intellectual property theft.

A indictment of the Megaupload staff from the U.S. Department of Justice issued in January accused the group of taking part in ““the Mega Conspiracy, a worldwide criminal organization whose members engaged in criminal copyright infringement and money laundering on a massive scale.” The DOJ has charged Dotcom and his staff with participating in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement.

Dotcom has dismissed those claims as “nonsense,” telling a New Zealand news station that he’s “no piracy king” but instead he “offered online storage and bandwidth to users and that’s it.”

Megaupload was a popular file-sharing site until it was shut down by authorities earlier this year, around the same time as Dotcom’s arrest. Some people used Megaupload to share files legally, but other users may have been engaged in piracy.

The fate of the data stored on Megaupload’s servers remains unclear.

The embattled Megaupload founder was released on bail in spite of American worries that he would flee New Zealand. Dotcom must, however, wear a tracking device that monitors his movements and his passports have been taken away. According to a New Zealand judge, $17.8 million of Dotcom’s assets have been seized and $6.8 million have been frozen.

In a recent interview, Dotcom denied that he would run from the country, instead insisting that he committed no crime and would face the U.S. charges against him.

New Zealand authorities have scheduled a hearing on Dotcom’s extradition for late August of this year.
