UK firm to lay off hundreds of US staff

British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced plans to lay off hundreds of its employees in the US.

According to reports on Wednesday, the British drug manufacturing firm will lay off hundreds of its workers in the US by the end of 2015 in a bid to reduce costs and streamline its marketing and research activities.

GlaxoSmithKline has some 99,000 employees all around the world, of whom 17,000 work in the US. The company has not specified the exact number of the planned layoffs.

In October, GSK officials announced drops in the company’s global sales and net income.

Amid stagnant overall sales, the GSK decided to reduce its annual costs by about $1.6 billion through a number of measures, including job cuts and the contraction of investment in less promising research projects.

GlaxoSmithKline, renowned for its popular asthma inhaler Advair, ranks sixth among the world’s pharmaceutical companies by revenue.
