Ukraine new PM holds cabinet meeting

Ukraine’s newly appointed interim prime minister has held his first cabinet meeting.

The meeting was held on Thursday in the capital, Kiev, after Ukraine parliament approved the new coalition government.

Arseny Yatsenyuk told parliament that ousted president, Viktor Yanukovich, had driven the country to the brink of collapse.

The newly approved 21-seat cabinet is faced with tremendous challenges in order to save the country from economic crackdown and threat of separation.

Yatsenyuk also said that he would work to stabilize the mounting tension in the semi-autonomous region of Crimea, where armed men seized the regional parliament and other buildings.

On February 27, dozens of gunmen seized the government and parliament buildings in Crimea and raised Russian flags over them.

However, Moscow denies that its forces have been involved in the events in Crimea.

Unrest erupted in Ukraine in November 2013, when Yanukovych refrained from signing an Association Agreement with the European Union.

On February 23, the Ukrainian parliament ousted Yanukovych and named Oleksandr Turchynov, the legislature’s newly-elected speaker, as interim president.

On Friday, Yanukovych said the power in Ukraine had been seized by a fascist minority. He added that he had not been deposed, rather stripped of power by what he called pro-fascist mobs.

“I have not been overthrown by anyone. I was compelled to leave Ukraine due to an immediate threat to my life and the life of those close to me,” Yanukovych stated.
