Ukraine seizes police station in Lugansk

The Ukrainian government forces have taken control of a regional police headquarters in the eastern city of Lugansk after fierce fighting with pro-Russia forces, an army spokesman says.

Andriy Lysenko said on Sunday that the Ukrainian army forces had taken the state building after entering the key eastern city held by pro-Russia forces.

“Yesterday, after a battle for… a residential district in Lugansk, the forces took control over the Zhovtnevy (district) police station building and raised the Ukrainian flag,” he added.

Lugansk, located near the Russian border, has been under the control of pro-Russia forces since April.

The Ukrainian forces are tightening the noose around the militia positions in the east.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said on Saturday that Ukraine would “fight until the last moment” for Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk.

Lugansk is under siege conditions and heavy shelling by the Ukrainian government. Some 250,000 people in the eastern city have reportedly been left without water, electricity and communications for over a week.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since the government in Kiev launched military operations in mid-April in a bid to crush the pro-Russia protests.

The political unrest in eastern Ukraine has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, according to figures by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Nearly 300,000 people have also been forced to flee their homes due to fierce fighting in the east, according to the UN.
