UK’s detention of migrants condemned

In the Draft report of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review published on Monday June 25, the state representatives from Mexico, Chile, Honduras and Ecuador called on the UK government to take action against the indefinite detention of migrants, as unlike many other EU countries, there is no time limit to immigration detention in Britain.

The Mexico’s representative recommended that the UK should, “In line with the British Government commitment to the universality of human rights, prohibit the indefinite detention of migrants, seek alternatives to their detention and ensure that such detention is for the shortest possible duration.”

The Tory-led government’ response to the report will be published in the outcome report which will be adopted by the Human Rights Council later on September this year.

According to a report titled “Not a Minor Offence”, which was published on May 20, while the Coalition government had vowed to end keeping under-18s in detention centers two years ago in 2010, child asylum seekers are still being imprisoned by the UK Border Agency (UKBA).

Furthermore, earlier on May, victims of torture who were held in UK immigration detention centers launched legal proceedings against the UK Border Agency (UKBA) for false imprisonment.

A study by Medical Justice, based on a dossier of 50 cases published on May 22, showed that torture victims are being routinely held in British immigration detention centers in breach of the UK government’s own rules.
