‘US bases undermine Kabul sovereignty’

“Signing strategic agreements between Afghanistan and the United States, should it lead to military bases on the Afghan soil, is by no means acceptable to the Afghan nation,” Balkh Governor Atta Muhammad Nur said on Tuesday.

The establishment of bases for foreign militaries in Afghanistan constitutes disgrace for the country and questions the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan, he stated.

Speaking at a meeting of provincial leaders’ summit in Mazar-e-Sharif, Nur blamed the US-led forces of failing to live up to their security and reconstruction pledges.

Foreigners have not only failed to take fundamental substantial measures to improve or equip Afghanistan’s Armed Forces, but have also spoiled progresses made under former regimes, he noted.

Nur further called on President Hamid Karzai’s government and the international community not to engage in talks with all parties expressing interest in peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Negotiating with people who refuse to put an end to their terrorist activities is futile, he said.

In early 2012, the Taliban expressed readiness for reconciliation talks, with US forcing Kabul to agree to a deal to allow the militants open a peace mission in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar.

Analysts see the U-turn in Washington’s policy toward the Taliban and the negotiations with the militants as a sign of failure for the decade-long US-led war in Afghanistan.

The United States led the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, which was launched under the pretext of toppling the Taliban’s extremist regime.
