US seeks to get rid of econ. rivals: Iran

Certain countries that do not consider the national interests of independent states are attempting to influence the relations (between sovereign countries) or impose restrictions on them by means of political leverage, Mehmanparast told IRNA on Tuesday.

Unfair resolutions and unilateral sanctions imposed against Iran by the Western countries are examples of such political pressure, he added.

He noted that the US and West intend to cause disruption in economic plans of emerging economic powers such as Japan by damaging their long-term sustainable energy resources.

The spokesperson advised independent nations to be cautious about such politically-motivated pressures.

On New Year’s Eve, the United States imposed new sanctions against Iran aimed at preventing other countries from importing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran (CBI).

European Union foreign ministers also approved sanctions against Iran’s oil and financial sectors on January 23, including a ban on Iranian oil imports, a freeze on the assets of the CBI within EU states, and a ban on selling grains, diamonds, gold, and other precious metals to Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly refuted the Western allegations regarding its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
