US setting up radar station in Qatar

“The radar site will complete the backbone of a system designed to defend US interests and allies such as Israel and European nations,” The Wall Street Journal quoted unnamed US officials as saying on Tuesday.

The Pentagon decided to set up the new radar station in Qatar since the country already hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US air base in the region.

More than 8,000 troops are stationed at Al Udeid and another US base in Qatar.

It is estimated that the construction of a pad for the radar, roads, barracks, and security measures at the site of the planned radar will cost $12.2 million.

The US is also organizing its biggest minesweeping exercise ever in the Persian Gulf.

Washington recently expanded its military presence in the Persian Gulf, sending an unspecified number of F-22 stealth fighters and warships to the region.
