US troops ‘to face disciplinary action’ over Koran burnings

The Korans and other Islamic texts were taken from Taliban insurgent prisoners
being held at the prison in Bagram after officials believed inmates were
using them to secretly pass messages.

They were put in bags for disposal and then inadvertently sent to be burnt in
a rubbish pit, officials said at the time.

Afghan labourers witnessed the fire and rushed to put out the flames.

Barack Obama and the head of the Nato coalition apologised profusely, but many
Afghans still believe the burning was deliberate and showed Western contempt
for their religion.

Relations between Afghan and coalition colleagues have yet to recover from the
retaliatory shootings which followed. Hundreds of foreign advisers were
pulled out of government ministries after the attacks and those that have
returned have needed heightened security measures and more bodyguards.

“It’s not the same as it was before, and I’m not sure it ever will be again. A
lot of the trust has gone,” one British-funded adviser told the Daily
Telegraph.

George Wright, Army spokesman, said “the investigation is complete and pending
review by senior service officials.”

The findings will be referred to the appropriate commands “for any action they
deem appropriate,” he said.
