Before you take a plunge in a public pool this scorching hot summer, we have one piece of advice for you: Never ever drink the water!
If for some reason you ended up swallowing some, do not be surprised if you end up sick for weeks for diarrhea-like symptoms andvomiting.
The health advice comes after a report revealed that there is a diarrhea-like causing parasite named ‘Crypto’ that caused major water parks and swimming pools prone to the outbreak since 2016 as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Even if a pool claims to be properly maintained and sanitized, Crypto parasites can still be around, as it can survive for 10 days in clean water. The pesky parasite can likewise continue to thrive after being soaked with standard levels of chlorine. The way people can become sick is if they swallow water that’s been in contact with feces of a sick person.
Pool water can seem clean at first glance, it is very common that it is somehow contaminated with human feces. 1 in 4 adults confess that they would swim even if they had diarrhea, this is according to the survey made by the Water Quality and Health Council.
Michele Hlavsa, chief of CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program warned:
“To help protect your family and friends from Crypto and other diarrhea-causing germs, do not swim or let your kids swim if sick with diarrhea. Protect yourself from getting sick by not swallowing the water in which you swim.”
In their report, the CDC enumerated a number of ways you can safeguard yourself and your family from getting sick when you come close the germs that can cause diarrhea-like symptoms:
Never swim if you have diarrhea
If your diarrhea is induced by Crypto, let 2 weeks pass before you swim again
Never ever swallow pool water
Have a shower before you swim
Take babies or kids in the bathroom for breaks
If your child wears diaper, check them before getting them to the pool
The moment the water is infected with Crypto parasites, the CDC strongly suggests closing down the pool and treating the water first before they can be reopened to the public.
