Israeli settlers

The U.N. has ordered that Israel should immediately remove all settlers from the West Bank, the U.N. said in a statement this week.

Investigators from the U.N. human rights council on Thursday called on Israel to stop settlement expansion and remove all half a million Jewish settlers in the West Bank, saying that their presence may be prosecuted as possible war crimes.

A panel of three members of the U.N. said that private companies should stop working in settlements if their work adversely affects the human rights of the Palestinians, and urged Member States to ensure that their companies respected human rights.

“Israel must stop settlement activities and provide adequate reparation, promptly and effectively to

victims of human rights violations,” Christine Chanet, a French judge who headed the U.N. investigation, said in a press conference.

The settlements violate the Fourth Geneva Convention that prohibits the transfer of civilians into occupied territory and that could amount to war crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court or ICC, the U.N. report said.

“To transfer its own population into occupied territory is prohibited because it is an obstacle to the exercise of the right to self-determination,” Chanet said.
