A Tesla For The Masses? The World Responds To The Electric Vehicle With 140,000 Orders Immediately

For years, Tesla — the automobile manufacturer, not the revolutionary engineer — has been at the forefront of automobile ingenuity, moving us away from conventionally powered vehicles and towards cars which practically pay for themselves. Their electric cars have been leading the way towards a greener tomorrow, but with one major point of criticism: their high price point.

Thankfully, Tesla recognized this issue, and on Thursday they unveiled their newest vehicle at an assembly in Hawthorne, California. The Model 3 has a starting price of $35,000 USD for their base model, which lowers to approximately $27,500 after federal tax credits.

This amount, assuredly, remains unaffordable for many people, but it represents a major step closer for the manufacturer whose cars, prior to this, fell within the luxury vehicle price range.

The car itself is said to have a range of 215 miles on a full charge, and is also equipped with what the company refers to as “fast charging” technology. Other features include but are not limited to: two trunks, a sheet glass roof, and a 15-inch flat screen as its central command station.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the car should most likely be available for sale to the public in 2017.

By 10PM on the same day of the unveiling, it was announced the company had received over 140,000 advance orders for the new vehicle, showing that the world truly is ready to go green. The large number of pre-orders is also reflective of the car being seen as affordable to more of the general population.

As someone who personally believes that big business regularly suppresses many revolutionary and environmentally friendly automobile alternatives, much to our detriment, I’m happy to see this stride being made. There is no doubt that electric vehicles do significantly less harm to our planet, so their wide release at a much more affordable price point is certainly something to be excited about.

I also find humanity’s early response very encouraging, as the 140,000 advance orders show that the world is ready to embrace a healthier way of being if it is made accessible to them. While I’m sure that the car’s sleek design and cool features helped to make the pre-order even more enticing, I do believe that a lot of genuine care for the planet played a big role in the sales numbers.

The Model 3 is being labelled as the company’s first attempt at a car for the people, showing that there is a plan in place to continue to make these alternative vehicles more and more affordable to us all over time. Hopefully Tesla is able to come through on the Model 3 by 2017 and at the price point stated in the public address; if they do, I welcome it as a promising step forward for alternative vehicles.
