‘Americans trust in high court record low’

The study was conducted by the Pew Research Center, which reports that the figure reflects the lowest approval of the Supreme Court in the 25 years it began polling on the institution’s favorability, the US-based daily The Christian Science Monitor reported Tuesday.

The new figure reflects a 12-percent decline from 64 percent three years ago and a high of 80 percent in 1994.

However, the Supreme Court still remains way more popular than the US Congress and somewhat more popular than President Barack Obama but its popularity is no longer in the stratosphere – and that, according to the report, may open the door to attacks by the president as he runs for a second term as the US President.

The Pew survey was carried out between April 4 and April 15, right after Obama had made his Rose Garden remarks criticizing the high court.

However, the study found little partisan difference in public viewpoint of the court. Fifty-six percent of Republicans held a favorable view of the court, while 52 percent of both Democrats as well as independents expressed a positive view.
