Armed groups kill 5 more Syrian troops

According to the official Syrian News Agency SANA, a Brigadier General and two law enforcement personnel were killed on Wednesday after an explosion hit a military vehicle in JdeidAt Artouz in Damascus Countryside.

Four soldiers were also injured in the blast.

Two other security personnel were killed during clashes with armed groups in the Mediterranean province of Latakia. Many others, including two captains, were also wounded in the clashes. A number of terrorist were also killed in the exchange of fire.

Terrorist groups fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have stepped up their attacks targeting civilians and security forces in recent days. At least 15 Syrian soldiers were killed by armed groups in Latakia on Tuesday.

On Monday, armed groups announced that they have abandoned the ceasefire brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and that they have killed more than 100 soldiers across the country over the weekend.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011 and many people, including hundreds of security forces, have been killed in the country over the past 15 months. While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
