‘Arming Syria opposition, huge mistake’

Clinton was speaking on the sidelines of the gathering in Mexico of foreign ministers of 20 leading economic countries also known as G-20. She said Moscow and Beijing are wrong in supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Clinton said countries who are against Syrian government, also known as Friends of Syria group, will gather next week in Tunisia to discuss the developments in the country.

Earlier this month, Russia and China vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that called on Assad to step down.

Press TV has conducted an interview with William Beeman, professor of the University of Minnesota, to further talk over the issue. What follows is the transcript of the interview:

Press TV: First of all, I would like to get your opinion on how you view and define this Syrian opposition, for which US officials are now speaking of supporting by arming them?

Beeman: The difficulty that we have in Syria is that we have a minority government that is ruling over a majority and the majority Sunni population has had difficulty with the Syrian government even under the regime of Hafiz al-Assad.

It has been a long standing problem in the country of Syria ever since it was established back after World War I. So it is very difficult for us to really talk about any kind of stability in the country until the differences between these populations are sorted out.

However, I should tell you that personally I think that arming the opposition to the government is a terrible mistake; nevertheless, it serves the purposes of some international parties who are interested in seeing regime change in Syria as part of a larger plan to affect regime change in countries throughout the Middle East.

Press TV: Speaking of which, there is no doubt that anti-government factions within Syria are armed with sophisticated weaponry, as many have pointed out. Who up until now has been arming them?

Beeman: I have no doubt that the parties that have been arming the opposition are … I mean, I cannot say for sure but certainly there would been an interest on the part of Israel to arm the opposition to the Syrian government.

They feel that the government of Syria, the Alawite government, has been supporting Hezbollah and they see Hezbollah as the enemy of Israel. So it is really not clear at all who has been providing the arms. I would also not be surprised if the arms were being provided from other Arab nations who are interested in supporting the Sunni population of Syria.

So there are many parties who are interested in seeing regime change in Syria; they want to see the Alawite government out of power. And so they would be supplying arms to the opposition.

Press TV: With the way things are progressing in Syria, do you see the Libya-scenario might be being applied here by the West and its allies?

Beeman: It is a different scenario than the Libya scenario but; nevertheless, as the overall idea in the Syrian situation is to try to, as they say, change the government, to affect regime change and to try to install a government that will be more favorable to the United States, more favorable to Israel and more favorable to the Sunni Arab world.
