Awake Goy Arthur Wardle (1860–1949) was an English painter who was well-renowned for his paintings of animals, especially canines. He would paint both wild and domestic animals, and include human figures in both kinds of pieces. He was first featured at the Royal Academy at the young age of 16 with his study on cattle on the Thames River. He would frequently go to the London Zoo in order to study the animals and refine his skills. The animals in his pieces often have a great sense of movement. Arthur used oil, watercolor and pastels for most of his pieces, preferring pastels for when he needed to work quickly. He was renowned for being able to accurately represent detailed markings and fur. He was commissioned by many dog owners and advertisers, finishing many works in his lifetime, only a few of which are presented here.
