North Miami Beach police officers shot and killed Ernest Vassell, a 57-year-old autistic man, on Wednesday after responding to calls about a man seen walking with a rifle. But the gun was later determined to be a realistic-looking toy.

The officers said Vassell refused orders to drop the “weapon,” and was shot after turning around and facing the police.

These cops are not cops. They are recruits coming back from war. Our city just hired 7 more and we find out their training consisted of 8 weeks of training. What does that tell you. A real big problem that lead to a killing like this is that most town, or cities don’t have police walking a beats anymore. Police are sitting in cars not talking to the community they serve, and getting to know some of the locals. A lot of police today are sitting in their squad cars talking on cell phones, and texting than meeting the public they serve.

The town I grew up in had police walking a beat until I was in my late teens. Police walking a beat knew all the locals, especially the handicapped in the town. The local police in my town would take time to talk to the mentally challenged to see how they were doing, and if they needed anything. When the mentally challenged would have a meltdown the police knew who they were, knew they could defuse a situation verbally, and would drive them home, or a hospital depending on the situation.

Instead police are being trained to hide to look for slightest infraction of the law than getting to know the public that pays their check.
C’mon. There’s no excuse for this. They could have hailed him from the car, from a safe distance, they could have hailed him from behind cover.   - You got that right. Here’s the first step: Cops HATE being recorded on video for obvious reasons. We’ve begun a little “policing the police” where some cruisers are being followed at every shift change from start to finish and their whole shift is recorded. Every cruiser is annotated by license plate and unit number, time of day and date, and every move they make is noted from A-Z. Lunch breaks, false “blues” to get through traffic, security checks for certain ” special citizens”, stopping to talk with pedestrians, etc. If they’re going to talk the talk, they’re going to walk the walk.
OK being a Law enforcement officer I can understand the importance of preventing someone from walking down the street from brandishing a firearm. One problem I have with this incident is that how far away were the police officers from this man? Is this not why we have tasers? In this day and time there are many tools available to police officers and if that person refused to acknowledge commands but wa not actively pointing the weapon and shooting doesnt a body armored police officer have a responsibility to the public to approach the man and attempt to verify any supposed reality? I am not a brave man but if im wearing body armor I approach the man with gun drawn, I get close enough I see the gun isn’t real I dont shoot I am safer than the average citizen already with body armor. The problem is simply that too many police officers are less than brave much less. We are supposed to risk our lives for the safety of others that is the way it has always been. That is the way it should be.

Hey people don’t worry the cops have to answer to God like anyone else…. However if someone had a weapon and turned around to pointit at you, would you stop to think about anything else? I wouldn’t….. If it looked real, then they felt a real threat. We don’t know, we weren’t there to really judge it. I’m so happy God is watching, we don’t need any other judge!
They refused to release a photograph! Probably so nobody can see the brightly colored water gun….what makes it obvious that the cops where very trigger happy!
I might buy that bit about it looking like a real gun…when I see some pictures of it. Yes, cops are entitled to defend themselves, but they are not entitled to kill people who do not comply with their orders. Most replicas/ toys/ soft air/ pellet guns, can be distinguished from a real gun by some one with half a brain. Is it illegal to walk down the street with a gun in Florida? Maybe the cops should have spent some time observing the suspect before jumping to conclusions.

(2) A man in broad daylight is walking around with a gun. I think if he wanted to kill someone he would’ve done it, not just keep strolling around with it in plain sight. Perhaps the “trained” servants should’ve asked themselves why someone would do this. If I did, the first thing that would come to my mind is the possibility of a mental handicap. Anyone else knows what would happen if some random people saw you walking around with a gun in these paranoid times. Perhaps you should observe him for even just a minute instead of just rolling up and shooting him. I understand the need to protect but ask yourself these simple questions first on the drive over. (3) “Authorities say they are delaying the release of documents until the investigation moves further along.” Mmm I bet, have to make sure they find a loophole of an excuse for this because obviously the “trained” servants didn’t use their heads..   Let’s hope the cop wasn’t a moran, and if that’s the case he has to feel terrible about now. It’s too bad about the victim of course, but, in this case I think the 2 sides of the story have some veracity and I find it easy to be sympathetic to the officer without really knowing the full story.

- All very good points. The problem is that most cops are not trained professionals. For years now, very few competent men have become cops because the pay and benefits suck, and the hassle just is not worth it. So then we end up with these incompetent, Rambo wannabes who do outrageous things like this.
  - yep, I guess the guy pointed it at the LEO so i think quickly releasing any video would be the best thing for this department. we all see cops gone wild and know what they get involved with, maybe I am wrong for hoping the officer didn’t want to kill anyone. Poorly trained? yes, i think over the last 20 years you will find that in many fields in the US.
