Bail for Trayvon killer set at USD150k

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. agreed Zimmerman could be released on USD 150,000 bail during a Friday court session, which also saw a surprise witness stand appearance.

Zimmerman’s lawyer Mark O’Mara, who was attempting to get his client released on bail, had requested bail of no more than USD 15,000.

Prosecutors, however, had opposed his release and suggested bail of USD 1 million for the shooter, who sparked nationwide rage by killing the unarmed 17-year-old.

Zimmerman, meanwhile, apologized to the Martins over the killing of their teenage son.

“I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. And I did not know if he was armed or not,” said the 28-year-old Zimmerman.

The court also heard Zimmerman’s wife and father, who testified that the shooter was a non-violent person and they would help ensure he does not escape should he be released on bail for a second-degree murder charge.

Zimmerman shot and killed the unarmed Martin in a gated community in the central Florida city of Sanford On February 26, in what he described as self-defense. He claims the victim had slammed his head into the pavement repeatedly before the volunteer neighborhood watch guard fired the gunshot.

Police initially declined to arrest Zimmerman, citing Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows people to use deadly force when they believe they are in danger of being killed or sustaining great bodily harm.

The incident has stirred a heated debate across the US over racial discrimination with social experts noting racial prejudice as a major factor in Zimmerman’s claim that Martin looked “suspicious,” and police refusal to arrest the shooter.

According to a recent report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, hate crimes target African-Americans in 70 percent of race-based cases.
