Bonnie and Clyde guns expected to fetch $200,000 each at auction

An auction earlier this year of two other guns seized from a hideout used by couple in 1933 fetched $210,000 — far in excess of the expected figure.

That has prompted speculation that collectors will bid much higher sums for weapons retrieved from their bodies. “It doesn’t get any closer for collectors of history,” said Mr Livingston.

The couple led the Barrow Gang of bank robbers after the Great Depression of 1929. At a time when financial institutions were widely reviled, they enjoyed some popular acclaim as perceived foes of big business.

But they were ruthless criminals who were believed to have killed at least 11 police officers and their popularity faded as civilian casualties of their shooting sprees mounted They have, however, remained as figures in the popular imagination through books and films, including the 1967 box office hit starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
