Boycott Israel goods campaign boosted

The “Made in Israel” label has already become a big problem for Israel’s international trade.

The Palestinians have long called for a boycott of goods made in the illegal Israeli settlements and have even lit bonfires to destroy them.

The extension of sanctions on the Israeli products is a result of the activities of the pro-Palestinian movement BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) which was established in Britain to boycott the Israeli goods.

Recently, South Africa has joined some European countries such as Britain, Denmark and Switzerland to impose a ban on the Israeli goods produced in the occupied Palestinian lands.

The latest move by South Africa to ban the labeling of the settlement products has triggered a diplomatic row. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has said that Pretoria has adopted a clear anti-Israel policy.

Danish authorities also said this week they would soon introduce labeling guidelines for the settlement products to raise awareness about the occupied settlements, which the EU considers a major obstacle to the Middle East peace.

The move follows a British decision in 2009 to allow retailers to distinguish whether the West Bank goods are produced by Palestinians or Israeli settlers.

This week, Swiss supermarket chain Migros said it would tell its customers if products come from the settlements to offer customers greater transparency. Previously, the chain identified products as coming from Israel.

In perhaps the strongest international stance against the settlements, the European Union has excluded the settlement goods from the duty-free status given to other Israeli imports.

Since 2005, an agreement between Israel and the European Union excludes products from the West Bank from a preferential tariff rate. The Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank produce items such as Dead Sea cosmetics and agricultural products.
