Charges laid after woman set alight in Gosnells

A hospital bedside hearing has been held for a 22-year-old Gosnells man, who was charged with setting his partner alight after the woman was seen running and screaming through a park in Gosnells yesterday afternoon.

Police alleged Johnathan Pauu poured petrol over the woman and set her ablaze, but was also burned in the process.

Mr Pauu remains under police guard in Royal Perth Hospital while the woman, believed to be aged in her early 20s, reportedly sustained serious burns to more than 40 per cent of her body in the alleged attack.

He has been charged with having an intent to cause grievous bodily harm and consequently causing the woman grievous bodily harm and is due to face the Perth Magistrates Court on September 21.

Witnesses told Channel Seven that they saw a woman running through the park on fire, screaming for help, shortly after 3pm yesterday.

“I got some buckets of water and just help cool her off because of the burning,” one witness said.

The 20-year-old woman’s condition this morning was listed as unwell but stable.

The incident on Tay Court was initially reported to police as a house fire, however upon arrival, officers found the pair in a nearby park, badly burned.

Sergeant Susan Usher said details on what led to the pair being set alight was not clear, but said it will be alleged that an accelerant such as petrol was used.

The man was believed to have sustained burns to his arms and hands.
