Conspiracies behind Diana death

But some, including Dodi’s father Mohammed Al-Fayed , raised questions over the death of the princess, saying she was assassinated in an elaborate conspiracy.

The allegations then led to establishment of Operation Paget, a Metropolitan Police inquiry to investigate the theories behind Princess Diana’s suspicious death. But what are these theories and why she might have been murdered?

In September 1997, French investigators claimed that the driver Henri Paul was drunk and had been drinking before he took the controls of the car. The claims, which were made on the basis of blood test analysis has found that his blood contained a considerable alcohol level.

The claim, however, was challenged by a British pathologist hired by Mohammed Al-Fayed, who said the test results were not consistent with Paul’s sober state caught by CCTVs. The driver’s family also did not accept the blood test results.

There are reports that in November 2006 Lord Stevens, the then commissioner of Metropolitan police and the head of Operation Paget, had met with Henri Paul’s parents telling them that their son was not drunk at the night of accident.

Another allegation around the Princess’s death is the remarks made by former MI6 agent Richard Tomlinson, according to which he alleged that Britain’s spying agency MI6 was involved in the incident.

According to Tomlinson, Lady Diana’s driver on the night she died was an MI6 agent and that the intelligence agency was monitoring the Princess before her death.

The evidence to support this scenario is mainly based on the money in Henri Paul’s possession at the time of his death and his personal wealth.

According to Tomlinson, the MI6 could also have used powerful strobe light to blind the driver at the night of incident, a tactic which was introduced in MI6 agents’ training in the early 1990s to blind helicopter pilots.

Operation Paget’s investigations into the alleged conspiracy by MI6, however, rejected Tomlinson’s claims, saying such a tactic never formed part of MI6 training.

The former MI6 agent’s comments were consistent with eyewitness testimony.

François Levistre, an eyewitness at the scene of the crash, made clear reference to seeing a bright flash at the night of incident, saying that “The light was if you are caught by police radar.”

“The light was very powerful. It came into my car. The light was not direct towards me; it was directed towards the car which was behind”

Brian Anderson, an American tourist witnessed the accident, said he saw a bright flash too.

Following the investigation by the French authorities, the British government also began an official inquest into death of Princess Diana in early 2004. The inquest of hundreds of people concluded that the deaths were due to unlawful killing resulting from the negligent driving of the Paparazzi and of the Mercedes driver.

In December 2007, witnesses at Diana’s inquest were questioned about a letter to her former butler Paul Burrell which Diana had written by hand in October 1993, of which only redacted versions had previously been public.

In this letter, Diana said, “This particular phase in my life is the most dangerous – my husband is planning ‘an accident’ in my car, brake failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry Tiggy. Camilla [Parker Bowles] is nothing but a decoy, so we are all being used by the man in every sense of the word.”

But the most important motives for the Princess’s assassination is far more than that as there are some suggestion Diana was pregnant with Dodi Fayed’s child and the couple were about to get engaged on the Monday after the crash.

According to Mohammed Fayed, Diana and his son had visited a villa on their final day in Paris with a view to choosing a room “for the baby”. Dodi’s father also alleged that Diana’s body was deliberately embalmed soon after her death to ensure that any pregnancy test at post-mortem would produce a false result.

Evidence has shown that Dodi did purchase a ring on the day of their deaths.

Did the British establishment order Diana’s assassination to protect the monarchy? After all, the idea of a non-Christian within the British Royal Family meant such a relationship between the mother of the future king and an Egyptian Muslim would not be tolerated.

The princess, Dodi Fayed and the chauffeur Henri Paul died after their Mercedes crashed in a tunnel after it left the Ritz Hotel on the morning of 31 August, 1997. Now, almost 16 years later, it is not yet clear what really happened in Pont de l’Alma tunnel.

In August 2013, Scotland Yard announced that it is examining new information which alleges that Diana was murdered by a member of the Special Air Service (SAS).

Although the allegations do not specify how exactly the SAS were involved in the incident, several years ago, a German magazine ran an interview alleging that specially trained marksmen shot at the tyres on the car.

Other theories included claims that the black S280 Mercedes had hit a white Fiat Uno car before the crash. Mohammed Fayed said the white Fiat Uno was used by the “security services” to block the road in front of the Mercedes, causing it to swerve and thereby crash into the side of the tunnel.
