Back in 2009 Senator Mitch McConnell said on camera what has now become “famous last words” about the-then nearly completed Affordable Care Act which underwent a year’s worth of hearings (public and otherwise) and over 100 amendments provide by Republicans.

McConnell said: “This is a very important issue. You know, we shouldn’t try to do it in the dark. And whatever final bill is produced should be available to the American public and to the members of the Senate, certainly, for enough time to come to grips with it… And we are going to insist — and the American people are going to insist — that it be done in a transparent, a fair and open way.”

Fast forward less than a decade later and McConnell himself is leading the secret charge to conduct a “marathon of votes on their Obamacare repeal starting next week” even though the 13 Republican senators meeting in secret have not written a replacement, nor is there “agreement that has leadership comfortable they have 50 votes to pass a bill.”

Senate Democrats are in the minority, but have decided to stay up all night in an effort to stall so that Republicans can’t push their revision of Trumpcare through before July 4th recess.

This largely symbolic measure was intended to utilize the special rules in the Senate allowing each party 10 hours of debate on any measure on the floor.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer asked McConnell twice if he would promise that Democrats would have more than the allotted minimum of 10 hours to read and debate their Trumpcare revision, but the Senate Majority Leader scoffed and replied that lawmakers would have “ample time” to review their Obamacare replacement.

In addition to this week’s attempt, Journalist Alan Fram explains : “Democrats held the Senate floor for several hours late Monday and promised to use procedural tactics to slow the Senate’s work, to focus attention on the Republican effort. They say the closed-door, Republicans-only meetings McConnell is using to write the bill is an insult to voters.”

Tactical reasons for why Republicans are crafting this bill in secrecy includes “avoiding potential backlash from constituents who object to aspects of the new bill, giving political opposition less time to mobilize against it, establishing a precedent that can help push through other potentially unpopular legislation in the future.”
