Don’t vote for Newman, gay lobby says

More than 50 same-sex marriage supporters have flash mobbed Campbell Newman’s campaign office, urging voters not to support the LNP leader.

The young equal rights campaigners say Mr Newman supports bigotry and discrimination.

They said they would confront him again at a community forum in Ashgrove at 2.30pm (AEST) on Sunday.

Equal Love Brisbane spokeswoman Kat Henderson told AAP she and many young people who lived in the Ashgrove electorate were angry with Mr Newman for pledging to repeal Labor’s recent civil union laws.

Ms Henderson said Mr Newman may live to regret his decision.

“We are going to continue fighting for equal rights and if Campbell Newman thinks he can win the election and then take away people’s rights, he is wrong,” Ms Henderson said.

She said they had a clear message for Ashgrove voters: “Don’t vote for Campbell Newman.

“Don’t vote for someone who supports bigotry and discrimination.”

To add salt to the wound, a truck sporting a massive “vote one for Campbell Newman” billboard drove past the protesters.

Mr Newman’s stance on same-sex unions has sparked controversy at both ends of the debate.

Bob Katter’s party launched a TV ad and election pamphlets accusing Mr Newman of being two-faced on the subject.

The ad came in for criticism itself after the gay and lesbian community labelled it homophobic.
