Remember the oil spill into the Kalamazoo River from Enbridge’s tar sands pipeline back in 2010?
Besides being notable for the fact that parts of the river are still closed to the public as the spill has been particularly difficult to clean, due to the fact that it was tar sands oil being transported, it’s now also notable for the amount that Enbridge has been fined by the US government.
NY Times reports that the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (part of the Department of Transportation) will be seeking to impose a $3.7 million fine on Enbridge, a new record civil penalty.
Enbridge has 30 days to decide whether to accept or dispute the fine.
As the original piece rightly points out, the fine and the lingering affects of the spill, now two years old remember, are particularly poignant because this is the same type of oil that would be transported through the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
