Father dies after alleged fight in schoolyard

A father who died after being struck in the head with a baseball bat had driven to the assailant’s house over a schoolyard fight between their two children, a court has heard.

Clint Bassett, 40, threatened to kill Kayd Thorp, 26, after learning of an incident between their children at Point Lonsdale, Victoria, in February 2010, the Herald Sun reports.

Armed with a wooden club, Mr Bassett drove to Mr Thorp’s home to “sort the matters out”, prosecutor Russ Hammill told the County Court jury.

A confrontation occurred when Mr Bassett found him in the garage drinking with a friend, Mitchell Garside, 20.

Mr Thorp allegedly armed himself with a baseball bat and struck Mr Bassett in the head twice, causing him to fall to the ground with a bleeding wound.

The two men then dragged Mr Bassett into a laneway where they struck him an additional five times, the court was told.

Neighbours and Mr Bassett’s partner called an ambulance, but he later died at a Melbourne hospital.

But Mr Hammill said the prosecution accepted the hits were made in self-defence.

Both Mr Thorp and Mr Garside have pleaded not guilty to charges of recklessly causing serious injury relating to an alleged assault.
