Google’s powerful, low-cost Nexus 7 tablet a hit with social media users

Google has outed its Nexus 7 tablet, the subject of much speculation, at its annual developers conference in San Francisco.

Social media users on Google+ and Twitter are praising the device for its small price tag and enviable features.

The tablet is significantly cheaper than Apple’s iPad and much more capable than Amazon’s similarly priced Kindle Fire.

“Apple straight up got owned today!!!” say Plussers, “Just preordered a #Nexus7. Thank you, Google, for answering my need for a new, well-supported tablet.”

“Now the big decision. The Asus Transformer Infinity OR two Nexus 7’s?  I’m really torn,” post others. “The new #nexus7  looks like a very solid device. It’s the first Android tablet that seems like it will actually gain some serious market share.  That said, it’s likely to do more damage to Kindle Fire sales rather than hurting Apple.”

The sentiment was equally positive on Twitter with micrbloggers tweeting, “I am definitely diggin’ the Nexus 7 tablet!”, “The nexus 7 tablet looks especially nice for the low cost” and “The tablet war has now been officially declared. The Nexus 7 from Google (hot on the heels of MS Surface) looks nice and powerful.”

The tablet is manufactured by Taiwanese consumer electronics company Asus and is the first to be included in Google’s own-branded lineup of devices (which includes flagship smartphones like the Nexus One, the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus).

It’s the first 7” tablet to sport a quad-core Tegra-3 chipset and also the first to feature Google’s newly announced Jelly Bean Android 4.1 operating system. At just 340 grams Google claims it’s “lighter than most tablets out there.”

The Nexus 7 features a 1280×800 HD display, a 1.2MP front-facing camera (too bad for tablet photographers, there’s no rear camera), NFC and up to 8 hours of battery life.

The Verge pitted the Google Nexus 7 against the Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and concluded that “the Nexus 7 will be a popular choice for budget tablet shoppers this summer.”

The Nexus 7 is available for preorder from Thursday in the Google Play store in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. The 8GB version is priced from $199, the 16GB version will start at $249. It’s expected to start shipping in mid-July.
