Governor decision ‘not based on politics’

Returning the NSW governor to Government House isn’t motivated by politics and has nothing to do with the republican debate in Australia, Premier Barry O’Farrell says.

For the first time in 15 years, Government House in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens will once again serve as the office and residence of the NSW governor.

Professor Marie Bashir and her husband are expected to move into the official residence before Christmas and will stay in a nearby chalet while renovations to the heritage building are completed.

Mr O’Farrell said on Friday the political debate about Australia’s future as a constitutional monarchy played no part in his decision, which was made in full consultation with Prof Bashir.

“I’m not a republican, I’m not a hard and fast monarchist,” Mr O’Farrell told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

“I’m happy to vote for change one day, should that change offer me a better constitutional arrangement.

“I voted no last time because I didn’t think it did offer those better constitutional arrangements.”

The NSW governor has not lived in Government House since 1996, when former premier Bob Carr broke from tradition and ruled the governor would live elsewhere.

Since then, groups such as Australians for Constitutional Monarchy have been pressuring the government to return the governor to the residence.

2GB broadcaster Alan Jones had also been lobbying Mr O’Farrell, News Limited reported.

Mr O’Farrell said Mr Carr had a “half good” idea by trying to increase public access to the heritage grounds during his term, but let politics get in the way.

“What Bob Carr couldn’t resist though was the added ideology of insisting that the governor not live here,” Mr O’Farrell said, alluding to Mr Carr’s known support of an Australian republic.

“At the end of the day, what I think we have here is a victory for common sense – Government House again being returned as the home and office of the governor of NSW.”

Mr O’Farrell said he was not aware of any need for increased security to the site, adding that the current arrangements would suffice.
