Indian conjoined twins ‘abandoned by family’

Their doctors accused their family of turning its back on them and failing to visit them for 18 months.

They recently decided surgery would be too dangerous and that they should return to their families to live as normal lives as possible.

But according to the doctors, their family has not visited them for more than 18 months and has effectively abandoned them.

Dr Ranganathan, the hospital’s superintendent, said he believes the five years the girls have spent on the ward had left them isolated from the outside world and that they needed normal family interaction.

He denied the girls had been asked to leave, but said they do need to be reintegrated into society.

“This is a government hospital and we had invited their parents to discuss the future of the girls. They also need to be educated and exposed to society. The parents have not visited the girls for last one and a half years. The girls need family support,” he said.
