Indian train collision claims 16 lives

The incident took place on Tuesday when a passenger train slammed into a stationary train at Penneconda station in the Anantapur district, 400 kilometers south of state capital Hyderabad.

“Sixteen passengers were killed in the crash. Fourteen bodies were found inside the coaches while two passengers succumbed to injuries on [the] way to the hospital,” Anantapur deputy police chief M Sivaiah said.

Rescue workers and medical officials took the seriously injured to three nearby hospitals for treatment.

“It appears that the driver of the passenger train overshot a signal, and hit the goods train, but we are awaiting the results of an inquiry,” said Chandralekha Mukherjee, the executive director for information at the railways ministry in New Delhi.

The 155-year-old Indian railway system operates 9,000 passenger trains that carry an estimated 20 million passengers daily.

The railways have a poor safety record with more than 100 accidents reported every year.

Last year, at least 69 people were killed when a packed express train derailed at high speed in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

In India’s worst rail accident, an estimated 800 people lost their lives in 1981 when a train plunged into a river in the eastern state of Bihar.
