In a consequent walkthrough of events with Sergeant Bissett, Detective Inspector Russell Oxford had gone out of his way to provide much of the evidence himself and to ignore anything contradicting his view, Mr Mitchell found.
”The investigation was seriously flawed …”
Outside the court, Mr Salter’s father Adrian Salter described what happened as a ”tragic mistake”.
”It wouldn’t have happened had the police not been carrying guns and not been trained to use guns … as a first resort than a last resort.”
He said what was more worrying was that police had given a ”totally false” version of his son’s death.
Lynn Salter said her son, who was gentle, intelligent and kind, had ”such potential”.
”We should have mental [health] trained officers who understand and who would not ever draw a gun on someone who’s mentally stressed,” she said.
Mr Mitchell did not make any recommendations and said he would not refer the matter to the Police Integrity Commission.
Mr and Mrs Salter said they were still considering whether they would pursue the matter with the commission. AAP
