Iran favors Afghan prosperity: Salehi

“Iran continues to support stability, security, development and progress in Afghanistan [brought about] in light of an end to foreign interference and the presence of foreign occupiers as the key source of insecurity in the country,” said Salehi during a Monday meeting with the new UN Representative to Afghanistan, Jan Kubis, in Iran’s capital of Tehran.

He called on the UN to resist pressures exerted on the body by certain countries and take measures to facilitate the promotion of the interests of independent nations such as Afghanistan and its neighbors.

The Iranian foreign minister lashed out at the foreign troops in Afghanistan for their desecration of Islamic sanctities, noting that such “provocative and improper” conduct will only complicate matters in the Asian country.

On February 20, US soldiers burned the copies of the Holy Qur’an and other Islamic texts at the US-run Bagram airbase, located in the northern province of Parwan in Afghanistan.

The sacrilegious move sparked days of violent protests in Afghanistan, resulting in more than 30 deaths.

Salehi pointed out that Iran has so for paid an enormous price for the consequences of the persisting insecurity and instability in Afghanistan, including extensive efforts to deal with issues such as drug trafficking and Afghan refugees. He reiterated, however, Tehran’s resolve to continue offering assistance for the reconstruction and political development of Afghanistan.

Kubis, for his part, described Iran as a strategic ally of the UN with respect to regional issues, particularly Afghanistan, and urged Iran to assume a greater role in Afghanistan’s reconstruction process.

Afghanistan was invaded by a coalition of US-led troops in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban regime from power, but insecurity and terrorism continues to grow across the country despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led foreign troops in the war-torn state.
