‘Accepting Iran rights to help talks’

“If the Western countries are willing to accept Iran’s rights within the framework of the NPT, the issue can be resolved,” Mohammad Marandi, a professor at the University of Tehran, said in an interview with Press TV.

“Otherwise, if they want to force Iran to halt nuclear enrichment or to close the Fordow site, I think that the talks will get absolutely nowhere,” he added.

His comments come after Iran and the P5+1 – the US, Britain, France, China, Russia, and Germany- wrapped up the first round of their new multifaceted negotiations in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14, with both sides hailing the talks as constructive.

The Islamic Republic and the P5+1 are scheduled to hold another round of talks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on May 23.

Marandi also noted that the policy of threats and imposing extra sanctions against Iran will not help the negotiations.

“In order for the talks to achieve something, Western countries really have to make the first move. They have to accept the reality; they have to accept that their sanctions against Iran have not worked,” he said.

“They [sanctions] have hurt Western countries more than they have hurt Iran because Western countries are in economic crisis; they need trade; they need partners; they need cheap oil and basically what has happened is that the Iranian market has been handed to other countries such as China, India, Brazil and so on.” the professor concluded.
