Iran stands out at 2016 Asian Wrestling Championships

Iranian freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers stood atop the podiums in the 2016 Asian Wrestling Championships in Thailand.

On Sunday, Iran’s Parviz Khodaverdi Hadi Basmanj triumphed over Daulet Shabanbay from Kazakhstan 3-1 in the last encounter of men’s 125-kilogram weight category at Bangkok Youth Center, and pocketed the gold medal.

Mongolian competitor Zolboo Natsagsuren defeated South Korean opponent Koungjin Nam 9-2 to receive the bronze. Krgyz wrestler Aiaal Lazarev downed China’s Hai Shang10-0 by a technical fall to snatch another bronze in this category.

In the 86-kilogram category, Ehsan Naser Lashgari overwhelmed Mongolian rival Uitumen Orgodol and bagged the gold medal.

Iran’s Behnam Es’haq Ehsanpoor was downed by technical fault in the 61-kilogram class, and conceded a 10-0 defeat to Daulet Niyazbekov from Kazakhstan.

Mohammad Sattar Naderi also settled for bronze in the 70-kilogram weight class.

The achievements came a day after Iran’s Maysam Nasiri, making his debut at the tournament, overcame Kazakhstan’s Nurlan Bekzhanov in the last encounter of men’s 65-kilogram weight category at Bangkok Youth Center, and won the gold medal.

Mostafa Hosseinkhani picked up another gold medal for Iran in the 74-kilogram, and Reza Yazdani downed Kyrgyz opponent Magomed Musaev 5-0 by a technical fall in the last 97-kilogram competition to take home the third gold medal.

Additionally, Iran’s Greco-Roman wrestlers Afshin Biabangard, Ramin Taheri, Mehdi Aliyari and Amir Ghasemi Monjazi were also awarded a gold medal each in the 71-kilogram, 80-kilogram, 98-kilogram and 130-kilogram weight classes.

Saman Abdevali collected a silver medal in the 59-kilogram category. Mehdi Zeidvand and Payam Bouyeri earned bronzes for Iran in the 66-kilogram and 75-kilogram weight sections.

The 2016 Asian Wrestling Championships took place from February 17 to February 21 in Bangkok, Thailand.
