Katter party to contest Bligh seat

A former police officer will again contest former premier Anna Bligh’s Brisbane seat for Katter’s Australian Party.

The party will on Wednesday formally announce Robert Wardrop as its candidate for South Brisbane at the April 28 byelection, after Ms Bligh quit parliament following Labor’s drubbing at last month’s election.

Mr Wardrop ran against Ms Bligh in March, and won 3.39 per cent of the vote with 87 per cent of votes counted, the Electoral Commission of Queensland’s website shows.

Labor has endorsed Jackie Trad, who has lived in the South Brisbane electorate for 40 years and has worked in public policy, education and disability areas.

The Liberal National Party candidate is Clem Grehan, while Jo Bragg will run for the Greens.

Both contested the seat last month, with Mr Grehan taking 38.07 per cent of the vote, to Ms Bligh’s 38.6 per cent.

Ms Bragg won 18 per cent of the vote.

A loss for Labor would reduce it to just six seats in Queensland’s 89-seat parliament.
