Katter, Xenophon take aim at produce mark-ups

Nick Xenophon and Bob Katter want the big supermarkets to display their mark-ups on fresh produce.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon and Federal MP Bob Katter want Parliament to support a bill that would require big supermarkets to disclose mark-ups on fresh produce.

They say Coles and Woolworths need to explain the large price disparity between farm gate prices and retail prices of produce.

Both Mr Katter and Senator Xenophon have drafted a farm gate pricing bill so supermarkets display the average price paid to farmers for fresh food on shelves next to the retail price.

The bill still needs the support of a major party to be passed.

Senator Xenophon says it is time consumers realised the discrepancy between how much goods are sold for and how much farmers are paid.

“We need to have paddock-to-plate price transparency and that’s why Bob Katter and I next week in the Federal Parliament will be introducing legislation to ensure the big supermarket chains are forced to disclose how much they pay to farmers, because right now we don’t know how much farmers are getting,” he said.

Mr Katter says in some cases products like citrus have a mark-up of 1,000 per cent.

“So Nick says at least we are going to expose you for what you are,” he said.

“Now maybe there’s enough decent people left, with enough conscience left in one of the parties to stand up to Woolworths and Coles.”
