The son of federal independent MP Bob Katter has confirmed he will contest the next Queensland election under the banner of his father’s new political party.

After more than three years as a Mount Isa City Councillor in north-west Queensland, Robbie Katter, says he is ready to make the transition to state politics.

Councillor Katter will be running for the state seat of Mount Isa, currently held by ALP MP Betty Kiernan.

“I want to represent the area down in Brisbane, not represent Brisbane back in this area,” Councillor Katter said.

He denies his father asked him to join Katter’s Australian Party.

“You’d be a bit of a numbskull if you ran just to please your parents or had any change in career just to please your parents,” Councillor Katter said.

“This is a move that was a pretty big one for me.

“I quite enjoyed being a property valuer out here and sitting in that comfort zone but obviously I believe that things have to change in this state and I want to be a part of that.”

He says he has been motivated by the region’s housing shortage, the increased use of fly-in, fly-out workers, and the privatisation of State Government assets.

Councillor Katter says he is a very different politician to his father.

“A lot of people say he’s a lot more confrontational than I am and I’m a lot more sort of laid back and considered – I think they’re both strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

“Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and use them to your advantage, but we’re definitely different people in a lot of ways.”

Queensland Party

Meanwhile, Queensland Party Jim Nicholls says he still intends to contest the state seat of Mount Isa.

The party is facing deregistration after founder Aidan McLindon defected to Katter’s Australian Party.

Mr Nicholls says he will not be deterred by Robbie Katter’s decision to run.

“I’m not a great fan of political dynasties,” he said.

“In my experience, they haven’t always worked out well.

“They say in business, don’t they, that the first generation creates it, the second generation builds it, and the third generation loses it.”

Mr Nicholls says the people of Mount Isa deserve a representative who is focussed on state issues.

“I can’t see why a party with a brand such as the Australian Party would be standing in a state election,” he said.

“We put Queensland and Queenslanders first – no other party does that.

“We’re not subject to a mandate from Canberra – we do what’s in the best interests of the people here.”
