Outraged Conservative MPs have demanded an apology today after former London mayor Ken Livingstone claimed the party was ‘riddled’ with homosexuals and branded Baroness Margaret Thatcher ‘clinically insane’.

The Labour candidate for this year’s London mayoral elections argued that Conservative MPs were hypocritically denouncing homosexuality while secretly ‘indulging’ themselves.

Mr Livingstone – who was previously London mayor between 2000 and 2008 – made the comments during an interview discussing the issue of privacy with the New Statesman.

Mr Livingstone claimed the public ‘should be allowed to know everything, except the nature of private relationships’, before adding: ‘Unless there is hypocrisy, like some Tory MP denouncing homosexuality while they are indulging in it.’

He then went on to argue that since Tony Blair was Prime Minister, being gay or a lesbian had actually helped Labour MPs’ careers.

He said: ‘Well, the Labour ones have all come out. As soon as Blair got in, if you came out as lesbian or gay you immediately got a job. It was wonderful.

‘You just knew the Tory party was riddled with it like everywhere else is.’

But Conservative London MPs Angie Bray and Mike Freer wrote to Labour leader Ed Miliband calling on him to ensure that the remarks were retracted.

Ms Bray said: ‘These are the sort of offensive remarks we hear all too often from Labour’s candidate for mayor.

‘Ed Miliband should condemn these outrageous comments and get him to apologise immediately.’

A spokesperson for Ken Livingstone said: ‘Ken is clearly saying the advance of lesbian and gay people into politics is unequivocally a good thing.

‘He has fought for equality for gay and lesbian people throughout his life, and the fact they are represented in all major political parties is a sign of the progress that has been made.

Mr Livingstone also claimed that Margaret Thatcher was ‘clinically insane’ during her own time as PM

Mr Livingstone then went on to say that his rival in the May race for the mayoralty, Tory incumbent Boris Johnson, would never become Prime Minister.

He said: ‘I don’t think he has really got a solid ideological brain, like Chancellor George Osborne or Foreign Secretary William Hague.

‘It is very hard to find anything in Boris’s career that he’s serious about. He just loves life too much to really succeed as a politician.

‘It is why I think in the end he won’t be prime minister.’

He added that his own failure to make it to 10 Downing Street was because of his voice, stating: ‘I reckon if I’d had a better voice I could have been prime minister. It is the most irritating voice in public life.’

This is not the first time Livingstone has sparked outrage over his controversial comments.

Talking about the mayoral elections last year he suggested he represents Winston Churchill and Mr Johnson is Adolf Hitler.

He said: ‘It’s a simple choice between good and evil. I don’t think
it has been so clear since the great struggle between Churchill and
Hitler.

‘Those who don’t vote for me will be weighed in the balance come
Judgment Day. The Archangel Gabriel will say, ‘You didn’t vote for Ken
Livingstone in 2012. Oh dear, burn for ever. Your skin flayed for all
eternity.”

And in 2006, he was at the centre of a race row after comparing a Jewish reporter to a concentration camp guard.

The 2012 London Mayoral Election will be held in May this year with Livingstone seeking his third, non-consecutive term, while Johnson hope to maintain the seat for a second term as Mayor. Brian Paddick is standing for the Liberal Democrats.

I love Ken! Wish I could vote for him, ha. He is the voice of reason!

And this is the man who thinks he should be mayor of London? He’s not fit to be in charge of a rowing boat on the Serpentine.

You not becoming prime minister is nothing to do with the sound that comes out of you mouth Ken. It’s more to do with the lack of credible statements made using that voice.

Ken Livingstone is a total nut case and should never be allowed to apply for or take any form of public office – ever.

Livingstone was always useless. Londoners have a short memory if they vote for him again to be Mayor

Tell us something we did not know ken!

Lets hope Thatcher serves a writ on him for slander so he cannot stand for mayor
And he can pay her damages out of his multi million pound pension pot which he is now drawing .

Surely no one in their right mind would vote for Livingstone? Mind you suppose they would as strangely enough there are those out who would vote for a chimp as long as it was left of centre.

He does speak his mind! I admire him for that, he is like marmite, either You like it or you don’t ! Personally I love Marmite

Ken says he has “It is the most irritating voice in public life.”
Possibly so, but his words are even worse. They seem to come out from a distant part somehow and have become tainted in passing.
